*        TREGARON 2011 August 25th, 26th and 27th  RACING REVIEW
The Festival of Harness Racing Tregaron 2011 is now upon us.  It wont be long now until you are welcomed to three days of racing, 41 races and over 300 horses. An ideal opportunity to meet with old friends and make some new ones; to see the old favourites and spot some new ones (we are talking horses now!).  If you’re the oldest trotter in town or the newby to the sport, you will enjoy Tregaron.  For ever looking to improve and look for even greater value for money, on the Friday 26th and Saturday 27th the Festival will include The Cambrian Mountains Produce Village A new feature at this year’s festival and will include a range of food, drink and craft producers from throughout Ceredigion and the Cambrian Mountains region of Mid-Wales.  Tregaron has something for everybody – a wonderful social occasion and the cream of British Harness Racing all presented to you in the most beautiful of settings in the heart of Welsh Wales.
THURSDAY
Thursday starts with 3 heats of the Cors Caron Cup (Grade 3 & 4), horses that will attract attention are Lyons Carrie (Portmanock winner) but faces Ceredigion favourite Billy Borders in the heat. Blue Bop a Loola and Rhyds Artist both won at Boughrood and will have to be at their best to fight off a challenge from Grinin CT.  Justa Jiffy has been consistanly placed this year, Vyrnwy Shark has had 3 wins and both should feature in Ht 2 along with Teddy Get Ready, if the going is good.  The Cors Caron Cup Final winner is likely to come from Ht3.
A large entry from the 1 ½ mile Stayers Championship has resulted in 2 races.  In Div 1 the  11/2 will be a big test for several of these.  Div 1 sees Tregaron May meeting winner IB Gucci.  But the pick of the punch is Brywins Speedy (2nd in Musselburgh heat and winner low grade final at Appleby) with A Belles Thomas tagged as a dark horse. The 2nd Division has some serious campaigners – both the mares Jill and Jones and Laneside Lexus won the 2 divisions of the Stayers last year, either could do it again this year Lexus is the probable candidate to retain the tile, but Pans Landing (prev Musselbrugh winner) will be looking to get in on the action.
A healthy entry for the 2yo Junior Welsh Dragon will result in 2 heats with the final on Saturday.  Youngsters who have caught the eye are Camden Daniel and Hasty Hall’s little brother Long Slow Kisses but the Breeders Crown winner Cloud Burst will take some beating.  A smaller but equally talented field for the Fillies title - Ayr Pandemic winner Ceredigion 2yo & Sire Stakes, Breeders Crown winner Red Treasure (and could cause an upset) and York Futurity winner Meadowbranch Titan.
The 2yos are our future but now here come the giants of the sport for Tregaron’s Electric Mile – these horses need no introduction. The draw will be crucial Crown Manhattan Vs Doonbeg, yes, but don’t forget the recent Crock of Gold heat winner Mattador Hall and nobody would have a bigger fan club and more support than Tregaron’s favourite son Scoot Around.
FRIDAY
The day starts with some of the lower grades, keep an eye out for Afan Sir Ivor, Takeme2theriver, Camden Casanova and later on Brywins Jasper.
On to the Little Welsh Dragon, 13 colts results in 2 heats, the serious contenders are Frisco Havago (winner JWD 2010. Breeders Crown and Sire Stakes), Meadowbranch DJ (Derby winner and York 3yo) Infinatey (Appleby & Ceredigion 3yo winner) and Littlemill Rogue (runner up in so many times, will not go down without a fight).  For the Dragoness, with ten fillies entered this has become a straight race.  The standout filly has to be Rhyds Topaz, undoubtedly she is the one to beat.  Who has the ability to challenge her? Ladyford Ideal, Jambo Cam, and Brywins Joleen, but they’ll need a good draw and some racing luck.
Six heats of the Strata Florida and some tough heats.  Joseph Caffrey will be fancying his chances in ht 1 with either Camunition or Dragomatic with Dilemma somewhere in the frame.  Likewise Gareth Price will have to chose one of his horses, Clint or Hilltop West Art are both capable of winning the final, unfortunate to fall into the same heat.  Ht 3 ill be hotly contested Brywins Magicpotion (winner Ceredigion final Fri), IB Gucci (winner Tregaron Spring H’cap), local horse Ffynnon will be fancied and is due a big win and Boat Toy is never far from the business end of the action. Heat 4 and this time it’s Richard Haythornthwaite that has the dilemma, Sierra Romeo or Rebus, again both will be fancied, and if you’re looking for somebody to join them, try Boston Accent and probably a place for Mahogany Dream.  Heat 5 has last year’s Cors Caron winner Ceiron Eagle, 3rd in Musselburgh and is likely to fight it out with Temple Bar, expect to see Meadowbranch Nadia come with a late run.  The final heat could keep the locals happy, Oddsonbeth will surely feature and show her ability in holding off Talavary Cherokee.  As for the final Richard Haythornthwaite or Gareth Price …. Not sure which horse!
SATURDAY
The big day and straight into the Welsh Classic Heats.  Home Habana will take on Lyons Eryl Hall.  Eryl Hall will want to lead and Habana will want to come late – could be all on the line.  Heat 2 features the ante-post favourite and Musselburgh Hurricane winner Rhyds Hasty Affair and has been gifted a gate start, leaving American Gigolo, Monkey Harris and Meadowbranch Demon to have it all to do as she’ll take some catching. In Heat 3 Lyons Stallone will relish getting to the front early, runs his best races from the front but will have to keep the pace up if he is to hold off Scottish super star Astounding (runner up Musselburgh) and Irish raiders Pans Landing and The Fireball.   The 4th heat is a bit of an open affair, Wexford Beach and Jill and Jones have a great opportunity to make the final but on recent form Cutchall Hanover produced a fine run to finish 2nd Muss heat and could go one better here.  On to the top heat.  It is rumoured that Scoot Around will retire at Tregaron, and this could be his last race.  Win or loose he has served Harness Racing well, a true ambassador for the support. British Bred (well obviously to be more accurate - Welsh Bred, but of course to be absolutely accurate Tregaron Bred) and probably has more sub 2 min miles that any other horse in British History.  It’s been a pleasure to watch him grace our tracks for so long at the very highest level.  British Records, Crocks of Gold, Free For Alls – been there, done that, got the Rugs.  We wish him a long and happy retirement.  So who will his rivals be in this, possibly his last race - last years favourite Stoneriggs Mystery, will undoubtedly take advantage of his gate start and will need to do all to keep Mattador Hall, Lexus, Crown Manhattan and of course Scoot Around battling for 2nd position. The final places of the Welsh Classic final will be determined in Heat 6, recent winner Talavary Activator ran a blinder to win Boughrood final, but this will be tougher.  Havenaparty (Musselburgh ht winner), will be a major contender but watch out for local hero’s Grannell Shane (Welsh Cup winner) and Brywins Thatslife (Tanycastell Final winner).
Lower Grade races can be as tough as any, watch out for Wesley Jones and Jameirah; Meadowbranch Romeo, Red Light District; Mahogany Breeze and High Heel Rock.  The Trot has 10 runners and the prize surely goes to the commentator for pronouncing their names (… good luck boys!), Sir Groenhof won by a distance in Musselburgh but Jungle Drums say it’s very open.  Could Yleen Zes HB come trotting up to the winner’s enclosure or Roosevelt winners Quemener Kervilou and Tomahwak do it?.
Plenty of local interest in the Clwb Cardigan Bay Members Race, on form mare Mahogany Dream could feature with Grannell Shane, and what a delight it would be to see Annwen Evans and Real Deal winning on her Tregaron debut.
By now we will have had 40 races (and possibly some rain L), there will have been huge celebrations and the usual hard luck stories and now the finale.  The 41st race and The Oriel Welsh Classic and it will undoubtedly be a classic.  Statistics say that it is likely to be a 4,5 or 6year old, British Bred, Welsh owned, trailing 10 or 20yds and by a sire that has never won before. Go through them, there are a few that this criteria but for what it’s worth my search stopped with Rhyds Hasty Affair, she fits the bill… but … only 3 mares have ever won the Welsh Classic and NEVER has a mother and daughter won it … on the other hand Mick Lord has driven the most Welsh Classic Winners and Sheelagh Lord has trained the most Classic Winners….
Time will tell and it won’t be long till the Welsh Classic Anthem, The Chariots of Fire escorts the finalists onto the track and sets the scene for the drama to unfold for us all to witness the final Final and salute the winner of THE WELSH CLASSIC 2011.
Tregaron is THE Festival of Harness Racing, so make sure you are there.  You can still get discounted 3-day tickets and passes for the trackside hospitality marquee (further information or tickets/passes from 3 day passes available.  Contact Huw Evans 01974 298265 or David John Edwards 07833564941.  Be part of the action, come and enjoy the excitement and the unique atmosphere that is Tregaron.  And when it’s all over you can say ‘I was there!’  Hope to see you all at Tregaron. MAY, 2011

* The Spring Meeting and the season’s opening meeting got off to a good start with some very competitive racing.  Meadowbranch DJ despite several breaks narrowly got the opener from Vyrnwy Shark.  John Richardson also made it to the winning enclosure with Talavary Cherokee in the first heat of the Spring h’cap.  With a hard drive down the home straight he just managed to hold off IB Gucci, in a respectful time of 2.8.1.  In the second heat, Real Deal got to front as they turned for home,  but Another Toto, Wine Taster and Duggans Cherished all finished stronger to (in that order) to take the ribbons.  First four from each heat qualified for the final.

It was that man Richardson again for the 4th race, with the very impressive 4yo Artsplace filly, Meadowbranch Paige, who just held off American Gigolo – leaving the remainder of the field some distance behind.  In the next race Local trainer/driver Mike Evans made his move at the half with another talented filly, Oddsonbeth and just managed to hold off the fast finishing grey American Gangster. Mike Evans secured back to back wins with another local horse, Ffairrhoshillbilly capitalized on a chaotic first bend and got away to open up a very lengthy advantage and just held on by a neck from Western Dreamer.  The first of the  RED MILLS national series was a competitive race and it was Meet the Boys and Ayr Hero who secured their invitation to the series final to be held at Ceredigion in July.

The Senior Welsh Dragon saw the return of some of last season’s stars.  On paper a dual between megastar, Rhyds Five Star and Musselburgh champion Pans Landing, but could the local horse Fool Around get himself an invite to their party?  Stable mates Home Habana and Foolaround battle for positions through the first bend, but it was Mick Lord and Five Star who led down the back straight, Rhys Evans and Fool around was quick to slot it behind Five Star with Pans Landing parked.  From here Lord dictated the race, at the ¾ when Pans Landing failed to challenge and Foolaround had nowhere to go.  Rhyds Five Star was a comfortable winner and achieves the Treble of Dragons.  The Senior Welsh Dragon is one of the major races for 4yos in the UK, and it is worth noting that 5 of the 8 runners are owned and trained in the locality.

The FFA is always exciting, but the drama was not quite what was expected.  Jill and Jones led out, but Doonbeg and PanLubber went into a break on the first bend, Doonbeg soon recovered but Pan Lubber was left trailing.  River Inny took it up at the ¼ and led the pack through the ½ , but mis-communication between the Murphy brothers as Lucky Touch attempted to go up the inner of Jill and Jones caused absolute chaos.  Jill and Jones fell, seriously hampering Rhyds Desire and taking Rhyds Destiny out of the race.  Doonbeg got upalong side River Inny and had to pull out all the stops as both of them battled down the home straight, River Inny did not go down without a fight.  Doonbeg, the World record holder just got up and full credit to Panlubber and Rhyds Desire for recovering so well and being in contention at the finish.

The Tregaron Spring H’cap Final looked to be an Irish affair from the off, as the IB Gucci, Talavary Cheorke and Conway Tiger led them out and to the ½.  Paul Evans and Another Toto, had other ideas and having made up their 30yd trail came to challenge for the lead at the ½.  Another Toto and IB Gucci ding-donged all the way down the back straight, IB Gucci having the advantage of the inner and maintained his lead, managing also to hold off a strong challenge from Talavary Cheroke.

FULL RESULTS available.  You can also watch the action on TROT-TV or get your very own DVD from KEITH THOMAS.  Photographs available from MARK PICKTHALL 01974821375

* The 2011 season is under starters orders, nearly 80 horses go to post providing ALL connections comply with the administrative requirements of the sport. There are more ‘stars’ on the start sheet than Patrick Moore saw in the sky at night!  Apart form the asterix, there are certainly a few equine stars on the start sheet.  Stars of 2010 and stars in the making.  The Senior Welsh Dragon sees the return of 6 of the 2010 Little Welsh Dragon/ness finalists.  A clash of the titans between super horse Rhyds Five Star and Musselbrugh winner Pans Landing but do not overlook the local horses.  The Open Preferred H’cap (formerly known as a preferred FFA) has attracted several Tregaron specialists – most of the these have serious Tregaron form behind them.  Only two heat of the Spring H’cap but they will be competitive with some Irish fancied horses and keep an eye on Another Toto.  Plenty of good racing and hopefully some dry weather.

The season got off to a great start at the country’s premier grass track, with the honors being dispatched to all parts of the UK.  Tregaron avoided the heavy rain many had experienced on Saturday night, the track was soft and unlike Tregaron did not quicken as the day progressed.  The sun managed to mqke several appearances and the brisk breeze made sure that all the winter cobwebs were blown away for the start of the 2010 Harness Racing Season.    Racing got underway with the first division of the Grade 0, Jim McInally ensured that the legendry Saunders name was back in the firing line.  Saunders Bambi did most of the running fading in the last quarter but will surely be one to watch.  The winner Rhyds X Factor, a good looking Hasty Hall colt  was always at the business end of the race and only just held off local mare Ringaround with the Irish IB Gucci close on her heels.  The 2nd division saw too much action on the first bend, Lakeside Rumba went into a break and brought down the well-fancied Meadowbranch Belle, under the rules of racing both horses although unhurt were withdrawn from the re-start. The 3yo Panderosa imported colt, Pans Landing led out and never really looked threatened, 2 secs faster than the first div and surely looks like one to watch in the up and coming 3 yo races.  Paul Evans should be well pleased with his grey Krakatoa, parked throughout and ran well, whilst Ffynnon left it all to the last straight blistering down the outside to finish third.  Local favourite Meadowland Tom and the fancied American filly, She’s the Dollar never featured.

Saunders Page Boy made most of the running in the first heat of the Spring H’cap, Keep In Touch despite a good draw never seemed to get a good run, Mick Lord made a decisive move with Hearbeat in the backstraight and opened up a healthy lead with ease, leaving the pack to battle it out for the placings.  Despite the up and coming speedy youngsters, it was experience that told in the 2nd heat with 10yo Financial Matters (a previous Tregaron winner) cashing the winnings for John Richardson.  Dilemma and What About Me were full of running as was Grannell Shane for 6f.  Newcomer and fancied horse My Immortal failed to go with the pace.   The third and final heat was a closely run race with every horse in contention.  Young Will broke at the start and seemed to leave himself an impossible task, however he was there to race and all credit to him, got himself back into the race, but it was too much of a task to take on the very talented Rhyds Puzzle.  Kouros Boy looked to be in a good position coming round the final bend but failed to rise to the challenge when the question was asked.  First three from each heat qualified for the final.

Div 1 of Grade 1 went to the locally trained Adore Hanover, an eratic individual with ability, looked good in qualifiers last week and delivered nicely in this week’s race.  Gingerman made the running in the 2nd Div but when young local driver Rhys Evans pulled the plugs on Home Habana, there was only one winner.  Habana showed a tremendous turn of foot on the backstraight coming form off the pace to head the field.  Favourite Kemosabee broke and fancied filly Duggans Cherished was a non-runner.

Duncan McKenzie was full of concern as he had failed to jog his filly before the races and she had never been on grass … worry not, this filly handled it like an old pro and did little of her 10yd trail or the unfamiliar grass track.  The long trip back to Scotland won’t seem as bad when you’ve had such a good win.  Treasure left them all in her wake, leaving Talavary Cherokee to lead the charge from the strong finishing Hello Finally.  This race was the first of the regional qualifiers of the Red Mills Spring Series, other qualifying races at Ffos Las; Leominster; Staindrop; Appleby; Pike Hall with the Red Mills Final at Ffos Las on June 20th.  The second div of the Grade 2/3 turned out to be The Huw Thomas pace, whilst Huw partnered Lyons Leonie his second horse Blackfield Buddy was ably driven by Emma Langford and it was only Jim McInally and Cats Cam that was invited to join Huw’s party – the three dominated the race throughout leaving the other simply to sort out the minor placings.

The Senior Welsh Dragon is an opportunity to welcome back last year’s 3yo stars, 8 horses came to post.  Whitestar Hanvoer and Brywins Bouncer jeopardized their chances when they got hooked up as they left the gate – both continued in the race but it was too much to ask having lost their initial momentum.  Wexford Beach was drawn one and despite leading out of the first bend, he relinquished his lead, relatively easily, to Ayr Mission and retrospectively this may have cost him the race.  Ayr Mission slowed the pace coming into the home straight for the first time, allowing the field to close up and for Mick Lord to make a move and take last year’s top three year old, Rhyds Destiny to the top.  Wexford Beach gave chase, and despite putting a good few lengths between himself and the others, failed to draw in Rhyds Destiny who was sailing for home.

In the FFA,  Terripan Hanover made the most of his number one draw, led out well and allowing ‘the mighty midget’ Doonbeg to flow into 2nd from his 2nd line draw.  Mick Lord was quick to move in from his outside draw giving Rhyds Desire the best chance to get into the race, meanwhile Scoot Around and Blue Russian manage to get hooked up and once again hampering momentum and their opportunity to get a good position.  As in previous races Mick Lord was not afraid to take the race on, making a decisive move to get to the top, a ding dong battle ensued between Rhyds Desire and Doonbeg, they opened up 8 or 10 lengths and it was only the old Tregaron favourite that tried to give chase down the back straight, turning for home Rhyds Destiny headed Doonbeg, but it was nose-to nose, stride for stride, either horse could have won, but it was the pint size American import Doonbeg, that just got his nose in front to deny Rhyds Desire yet another victory at Tregaron, credit to them both.

First three form each heat made it to the final, with 3 gate horses and regular trails back to the back marker Purple Rain off 60yds.  Keep in Touch had every opportunity but failed to capitalize, older horse Financial Matters and Young Will featured strongly and were real contenders.  But once again, Mick Lord’s familiar blue colours could be seen to make a move around the outside of the field and drive his horse to the business end.  Several horses were in contention turning for home and in true Tregaron fashion, they were spread across the track but it was John Howard’s Rhyds Heartbeat that took the first final of the season (and probably not the last!).  A deserving win for this colt, in a day when not only did 3 full brothers take to the track (Rhyds Destiny, Desire and Heartbeat , all by Hasty Hall out of CPR) 2 of them winning the premier races and the third just getting pipped at the post in a FFA, now that’s what I call breeding!

MAY, 2009

The Welsh racing season got off to a flying start with a record number of entries for the Tregaron Spring meeting.  Keeping with tradition, a few quick rain showers helped keep the dust down (!), the going was soft but credit must be given to trainers who ensured that there were plenty of race fit horses battling it out in every race. The Irish were first to score, Ciaran Morrison blistered out of the gate with Springhill Partner – led from pillar to post, drifting badly on the run in which may hampered both O’Farrel and the fast finishing Limelight Legacy.  In the second, the three year old Check On Jack (1/2 brother to Jennas Beach Boy) and Bon Robert had a real dual for the line with Jack just managing to keep his head in front, connection of Bon Robert should be very pleased with their horses return to the track.

In the first Ht, Ja Ja Binks was first to show and set the pace, Mahogany Import moved impressively to take the lead, only to make a slight break on the last bend, allowing Eternal Lobell to take up the running and take the race relatively easily.  Import recovered well and just fended off a challenge from Ja Ja (of note in this race 3 of the first 4 home were by the same stallion, Immortalized).   2nd heat was 3 secs faster a tough race and still provided one of the tightest finishes of the day with Emma Langford (Rhyds Habit) just getting the better of the Irish challenger Porterstown Mystic.  In ht 3, Laneside Lexus was fresh from her fast starts at York, but would she handle the grass?  Yes she did, a tough race and a very gutsy performance going from last to first in almost one move.

Squaws Fella was an easy winner of the Grade 1 and in the following race local filly, Point West once again showed that she may be small but she is one tough cookie and one to watch in any 3 yo race this year.  In the next, another local filly Real Deal, just held on to win from the fancied Roddy Hanover and the late finishing Saunders Pageboy.  The 11th race saw Young Will (challenging) and Prucocious coming to grief on the last bend, hampering Rhyd n Write and allowing a clear passage for the winner Springfield Disreali.  Two fancied horses in the 12th  Camden Lover and Really Spring had a close battle throughout, they out-classed their opponents and made it a ding-dong dual up the home straight, could have gone either way but Camden Lover got the nod.

The Free For Allers meant business from the off, John Richardson took full advantage of his pole position and tried to dictate towards the ¼, but Vicky Gill was on a mission to get Mystery Man to the top.  A lightening ¼ in tough conditions, she lead then to the ¾ and looked as though she may have done too much but she kicked again around the last bend, opening up 3 or 4 lenghts.  Rhyds Desire was in pursuit, but even he failed to rein in Vicky and Mystery Man.  In the 4 yo Senior Dragon, Mahogany Dream set out of pole position with grit and determination.  Did most of the running, but probably paid the price of being on the increasingly sticky inside.  Mattador hall sat quietly for much of the race, but when he moved it was decisive, the Astreos filly Judy Hall gave him a battle round the last bend, a fine performance from them both.  In winning Mattador Hall, also took the ‘Stars Dragon Challenge’ in completing the treble – Junior Dragon, Little Welsh Dragon and now the Senior Dragon.

The final potentially an open race, Ja Ja Binks and Import were there from the start, but down the back straight the lightfooted Eternal Lobell tip-toed her way down the outside and cruised to the front, it looked like her day – but then Laneside Lexus who appeared to be completely out of it, made one massive move– Eternal Lobell had tired on the inside, Ja Ja Binks had found some good ground in the middle of the track, Wesley giving it his all and he was so nearly there – but nothing was going to stop Laneside Lexus, again she went from last to first, coming down the home straight along the outside rail – storming home, eating the ground with every stride and getting up on the line.

A great days racing and if today’s racing is anything to go by, hang on to your hats we’re in for a terrific season!

SEPTEMBER, 2007

Another fantastic 3 days of racing at the Tregaron August Meeting.  Thursday got off win CONNORS DRAGON winning the Stayers championship ‘The Cors Caron Cup’ and taking his 2007 Bonus.  The up and coming stars put their best foot forward in the heats of the 2 yo Junior Welsh Dragon, the locally owned, bred and trained MAHOGANY DREAM won the fillies heat whilst well bred import MATTADOR HALL won the colts heat.  The Tregaron FFA is always a fiercely contested race and this year was no different with GALLIANO getting his nose in front on the wire.          Friday’s Strata Florida Handicap went to NF Noitall and the Little Welsh Dragon saw Kikikolt and Rhyds Dream having another battle, but today was KIKIKOLT day.  Saturday is Welsh Classic Day and it was a classic day.  The impressive MATTADOR HALL won the Junior Dragon The heats of the Wlesh Calssic sorted out the men from the boys, but nobody would anticipate that the ‘big boys’ would go out so fast in the final.  The pace was obviously unsustainable, and it was a brave and patient drive from Craig Nuttall that ensured that CONNORS DARGON once again found himself winning at Tregaron – another 2007 Bonus and surely crowning him as King Connor!  FULL RESULTS THURSDAY, FRIDAY & SATURDAY

MAY, 2007

Glenys Jones’ 4 year old BON JASPER wins Tregaron Spring Handicap Final.  Bon Jasper’s win completed a fine day for the Meadowbranch Stables and John Richardson, who won 5 races.  American imports featured prominently throughout the day, however the first race went to Club Secretary Ray Jenkins and Blue Dreamer.  First heat went to the well fancied Rhyds Desire very impressive and was probably the one to beat in the final.  Bon Jasper and Flash Dance took the other two heats.  The next 6 races were won by American Imports  Cherry Hall, Artist Control and The Fireball were easy winners of their maiden races and are surely destined for great things this season.  The fine filly Betyourmiffed graduated comfortably to the open.  The 4 year old Senior Dragon looked also to be a battle of the yanks – however race favorite Crown Manhattan ruined his chances on the very first bend by going into a bad break leaving Connors Dragon relatively unchallenged.  Rhyds Desire came to Tregaron as a hot favourite – despite being only a 3 yo and probably with a very full diary planned for 2007.  He certainly didn’t disgrace himself and put up a strong fight but it was Bon Jasper who had that little bit extra to give on the home straight.   Congratulations to all the winners – a great day’s racing!  Full Results and Race Reports
